MAURIZIO MOLINO AS COUNT CAGLIOSTRO AND JAGODA N. WINTER AS SERAFINA

My residency at Swedenborg House inspired in the creation of “Apologia,” a captivating play that delves into the life of the enigmatic Count Alessandro Cagliostro. This 18th-century figure, also known as Giuseppe Balsamo, was a renowned magician, seer, necromancer, and alchemist who captivated Europe with his extraordinary claims and mysterious practices.

Cagliostro’s intriguing story, filled with elements of magic, mysticism, and controversy, resonates with modern audiences. His genuine belief in the power of the esoteric and his desire to improve the world, albeit through unconventional methods, raises questions about the blurred lines between spirituality and charlatanism.

In “Apologia,” I offer Cagliostro a platform to present his side of the story, a privilege denied to him during his lifetime. As the Inquisition destroyed his records, his legacy was shaped by his adversaries. Through this play, Cagliostro seeks to explain his mystical pursuits and defend himself against the accusations that tarnished his reputation.

“Apologia” made its debut at the Camden Fringe Festival in August 2024 and is currently undergoing further development. A New Stuff showcase at the Cockpit in November 2024 allowed us to expand the one-hour play into a full-scale two-hour production.
